Rochdale Observer School News Column for Saturday 3rd April 2010 |
Our PTA family quiz night was most successful, thank you to all who supported this event and especially the PTA committee members who worked so hard before and on the night itself.
Thank you to Jenny Wystawnoha for working with our gifted and talented children on dance skills this week.
Our display of decorated eggs for Easter was amazing, we have obviously got very creative parents and children. The theme this year was to decorate your egg to reflect a book character. Thank you to Cllr. James Gartside for judging what was a very difficult competition.
Year 5 all made a brilliant effort and came to school dressed as ‘Victorians’ on Friday for their special day. |
At assembly on Tuesday morning we had a very special visitor. Children were delighted to welcome one of Mr Sutcliffe’s new lambs. We have chicks hatching by the day in reception classes and we should also have butterflies soon. Spring has definitely arrived at Norden.

House of the Week was Shawfield.
The class with the best attendance last week was Miss White’s.
Mrs Boughton’s, Mrs Crabtree’s, Mrs Lowe’s, Miss Webster’s, Miss Kay’s, Mrs Hodgson’s, Mrs Harrison’s, Miss Tyreman’s, Miss White’s, Mrs Smallwood’s and Mrs Stott’s classes were all here on time last week! This is the most we have had so far, well done!

Rochdale Observer School News Column for Saturday 27th March 2010 |
Our Gymnastics teams did very well at the English Schools Finals competition at Stoke. Our girls team came 5th and were just .7 of a mark off coming 3rd, the competition was very close. Our boys came 6th, and being the only state school in the finals we are very proud indeed of our children.
Our next big competition is the Finals of Great Britain for our boys and girls teams which will also be held in Stoke on Saturday May 8th.
Our Athletics team came a creditable 5th out of 20 schools in their competition at the Aviva Sportshall Primary County Finals at Sports City this week.
We are absolutely delighted that our Y4 children won the Rochdale Trading Standards Easter Egg Competition this year.

We are equally delighted to have a new crossing patrol on Shawfield Lane we are sure that he will be made very welcome.
It is our PTA family quiz night tonight, 27th March at 6.30 pm. Tickets cost £5 per family ticket, and can be bought on the door. There will be a licensed bar, kids bar, hotdogs and a bouncy castle.

Rochdale Observer School News Column for Saturday 13th March 2010 |
Congratulations to our gymnasts as both our boys and girls teams won the British Schools Gymnastics Competition North-West finals at Siddall Moor Sports College last Saturday.
This Saturday, both teams will be competing in the English Schools Finals competition at Stoke, we wish them the very best of luck and we hope they have a wonderful day.
We were delighted with the performance of our school choir at the Rochdale Music Festival last week. All the children were amazing and have really improved significantly over the last year, well done!
Congratulations to our Y3 and Y4 boys football team who won their competition last week. It was a real pleasure to present their trophy and medals to them in assembly last Friday.
Coaches from Rochdale Football Club are in school next week and will be working on a variety of football skills will all children. The penalty shoot-out will be on Thursday of next week. Children will probably be busy collecting sponsorship on forms which should have come home with everyone this week.
PLEASE MAKE SURE PE KITS ARE IN SCHOOL EVERY DAY.
Parent’s evenings for Mrs Lowe’s Y1 class will be next Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th March from 3.15-6 pm. Letters have been sent home regarding these meetings. These will be held in the classroom.

Now that the weather is getting warmer and the days are growing longer it is lovely to see our Eco-warriors working outside in the woodland and the allotment, where we are preparing for our planting. Our fabulous new greenhouse is certainly proving useful as we plant our seeds to grow lovely new plants. Thank you so much to Ffion and Tommy’s mum for giving us so much help with this work.
Our Foundation Stage Unit has an incubator containing lots of eggs and the children are waiting expectantly for some new arrivals, our chicks.

Good Luck to our gymnasts as both our boys and girls teams compete in the British Schools Gymnastics Competition North-West finals today at Siddall Moor Sports College.
Congratulations to 42 of our Cross Country runners who won the Rochdale School’s McBride Trophy last Saturday.
Our next PTA meeting is Monday 15th March at 7 pm. The meeting will discuss the next fundraising event which will be a family quiz night on Saturday 27th March at 6.30 pm. Tickets cost £5 per family ticket. There will be a licensed bar, kids bar, hotdogs and a bouncy castle.

We are very proud of Holly who is organising a sponsored walk up Knowl Hill with other Rochdale Children’s Champions in aid of the children of Haiti. If anyone would like to sponsor Holly they can send donations in to the school office in a marked envelope.
Can all Parents/Carers make sure that their child has their PE kit in school every day. It is best if all items of kit are named and placed in a named PE bag which can be kept of their school peg ready for use.

Rochdale Observer School News Column for Saturday 30th January 2010 |
Congratulations to our gymnasts as both our boys and girls teams won their competitions in the English Schools Gymnastics Competition last Saturday at Siddall Moor Sports College. They will now represent Rochdale in the next competition in March.
There will be a PTA meeting on Monday 1st Feb
at 7 pm. All parents are really welcome to attend and we would welcome some new members onto the committee. Our next fundraising event will be a family quiz night on Saturday 27th March, please watch out for more details of this event and put the date in your diary. |
We have updated our school behaviour policy and details of this will be sent home with your child/ren. The policy is available to view on our website. Please search through bags regularly to make sure you are getting all our communications.

Each child has been given a Form for completion so, if you would like to become a Governor, please complete the form and return it by noon on Wednesday 27th January.

Note from the school office:
If you do not inform us why your child has been absent, it will be marked down as an unauthorised absence. Please telephone the school office on 01706 641013 as soon as you know your child is unfit for school.
The PTA has raised thousands of pounds by running social events. Their next meeting is Monday 1st February at 7pm. They are a very small group who would benefit from an injection of new members so, if you would like to help raise money to enhance your child’s environment whilst they are at school, please come along and join them. I am sure you will be well received and enjoy the experience.
Our Gymnasts are competing in the British Schools North West Gymnastic Competition this coming Saturday 23rd January at Siddal Moor Sports College on Saturday 23rd January. I am sure you will join me in wishing them all the very best. Enjoy yourselves and Good Luck!
Assemblies: Year 6 will be organising the Friday Assembly on 12th February, The Keyboards will be organising the assembly on 26th February and Reception on 26th March. If you would like to come along and join us, the Friday morning assemblies commence at 8.50am. |

Thank you to Michael, Amanda and Holly who represented Norden at the Big Listen Event at the Norton Grange last Friday.
All children will see the Pantomime ‘Mother Goose’ on Wednesday 9th December during the morning.
The Foundation Stage Nativity is on Thursday 10th at 2pm and Friday 11th at 9.30 am.
The next community meeting is
Tuesday December 12th at 7.30 pm.

Our PTA is going ahead with its plans to hold a family party on New Year’s Eve.
This is an ideal opportunity for family groups to enjoy bringing in the New Year, locally, with friends and at £10 per family, including entertainment, it will be a great value for money night out. Tickets are available from the school office.
Ashworth won the House of the Week trophy.

There will be a Bags 2 School collection on Tuesday 1st December. Please do not send in bags before that date as we cannot store them all.
We need to complete pupil health care plans for any of our children who have an allergy or medical problem. Please make sure that you have completed the medical information form so that we can contact you to make arrangements to complete the health care plan. It is vital that we have up to date information on your child.
Y4 classes visited the fudge factory in Whitworth on Monday morning. The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit and picked up lots of ideas to help them to plan their wares for their stall at the Enterprise Christmas Fair.
We have published our first book, an anthology of poetry, with contributions from all the children within school. Books cost £7.50 each or you can buy 3 for £20. These will make fantastic presents for proud parents and grandparents. Send in your orders asap. If you would like to view a sample copy, please call in to the school office where there is one available.

Our new venture, an Enterprise Christmas Fair, will be held in the school hall during the afternoon of Friday 4th December. All children in school will have been busy making items for the stalls that they will run on the day. All parents are invited to come along, any time from 1.20 until 2.50 pm. The school choir will sing at 2 pm. Children may bring up to £3 to spend at the fair. Details have been sent out about this, please search school bags.

Thank you to the Governors who attended our end of Green Week assembly on Friday. We hope that you enjoyed the fashions show as much as we did.
This last week has been national anti-bullying week and we have had a big focus on this in school. We have completed questionnaires, worked hard at getting on with each other and making new friends within school. We have discussed cyber bullying and we have learnt about how to keep ourselves safe. The week ended with all staff and children wearing something blue on Friday.
There will be a PTA meeting on Monday 23rd November at 7 pm. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the next event which will be the family New Year’s Eve party. Please come along if you would like to help in any way.

Rochdale Observer School News Column for Saturday 14th November 2009 |
21 of our Y6 children achieved level 1 or 2 at the end of their bike ability classes last week.
The Late, Late Halloween party raised almost £500 and was enjoyed by all who attended. Thank you to everyone involved for their support.
This week has been Green Week in school and we have tried to improve our carbon footprint. Children learned that improving the environment is fun and that small changes to daily routines can make a big difference. We wore a green item each day to remind us about what we were trying to do. We made outfits from previously unwanted materials and had a fashion show on Friday to show off our designs. We had a no or low electricity day on Wednesday. A willow weaver has helped us to sculpt woodland animals to improve our school environment. Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to make this week such a success.
Next week we will be focusing on anti-bullying week when we have lots of activities planned.

It was lovely to see so many of Mrs Boughton’s and Mrs Crabtree’s parents in school this week sharing a book with their children and listening to story time. This will be a weekly activity from now on, grandparents are also welcome.
Once again we welcomed the vast majority of our parents to consultation evenings this week where targets and progress information was shared. If you didn’t manage to come along for any reason please contact the school office to arrange an appointment to meet your child’s class teacher.
Thank you to everyone who supported our Book Fair last week. We were able to take £1,000 worth of books for the school. Our children and staff will really benefit from these additional resources.
We have supported the Poppy Appeal in school and observed the silence at 11 am on the 11th day of the 11th month.

Rochdale Observer School News Column for Saturday 7th November 2009 |
Y2 really enjoyed their puppet workshop on the Wednesday before half term. Not only did they see a splendid puppet show but got to make puppets in the classrooms afterwards.
We have been working really hard on ‘giving’ and have raised £300 to support ‘Self Help Africa’ from our Harvest appeal and £1,035.10 for Action for Children. We are currently supporting the Poppy Appeal. Thank you to our parents and families for this wonderful support for our charity work in what we recognise are difficult times financially for many of you.
Our Y6 children have been involved in Bike Ability classes this week.
It is individual photographs day on Friday 13th.

The Late, Late Halloween Party is tonight, Saturday 7th November. Tickets can be purchased on the door at £5 per family ticket. Don’t put those Halloween costumes away just yet, come and join in the fun!
Next week is ‘Green Week’ in school when we will try to improve our carbon footprint. Please look out for the letter containing details of what is happening throughout the week.
Next week is also National School Meals Week and there are themed menus throughout the week for children who have a school dinner. Children have voted for the lunch that they would like to have on Friday they have chosen Chicken Curry, Fish Fingers and Chocolate pudding.

Rochdale Observer School News Column for Saturday 24th October 2009 |
We celebrated Harvest this week with a special assembly. Our children wanted to support ‘Self Help Africa’ this year and we raised a magnificent £214 for this charity. It was once again lovely to see so many parents, grandparents and governors at school. Remember, any parents or grandparents can attend any Friday morning assembly throughout the year.
We had a vacancy for a Parent Governor and following a ballot this week, I am pleased to announce that this position has been filled by Mr Suhail Kauser.
The PTA AGM date has been changed to Monday 2nd November at 7 pm. Cheese and wine will be served and any parents attending will be entered into a draw on the night to win £25. All parents are invited.
Tickets for the Late, Late Halloween Party on Saturday 7th November are on sale now from the school office; £5 per family ticket.

Our new Multi-Activity course starts after half-term on Saturday 7th November from 10 am until 11.30 am. Activities on offer are cookery, Irish Country Dancing, Football, Karate, Pottery and Henna Hand Painting. On Sunday afternoons after half term we will be running a cookery class and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes. Please contact us on 657485 if you are interested in booking on to any of these classes.
We return to school on November 2nd after the half-term break. Y6 children will need to remember their bicycles and it will be Book Fair this week too. There will be a non-uniform day on Friday 6th November where we are asking for prizes for a tombola stall at the Halloween Party on the 7th.
Mrs Heakin’s class had the best attendance last week. Miss White’s, Mrs Hodgson’s, Mrs Lowe’s and Mrs Crabtree’s classes were the most punctual.

Rochdale Observer School News Column for Saturday 17th october 2009 |
Year 3 and 4 children were out and about in the local area last week as part of their topic work on our local environment.
It is our harvest celebration next Wednesday 21st October at 9 am. All parents and other family members are invited to join us. Our school council consulted with their classmates about which charity they wished to support. The majority of our children wish to support ‘Self Help Africa’ this year. We are asking for a donation of £1 to be brought to the Harvest assembly.
It was lovely to meet so many of our Reception Class parents on Tuesday 6th October. Parents found the meeting informative we were able to explain the way we teach literacy and Numeracy and how parents could help their child at home.
